In consideration of the correlation between gender and genitalia, I landed on the concept of bathroom signage and the absurdity of such a simplification.
I thought of the flower and its containing of both "feminine" and "masculine" parts, and the humor of their isolation amongst "gendered" characters. I followed the visual cues of the distinctive "male and female" denoted segments of the flower to create two divided figures from the main complete flower form. Reminiscent of bathroom label designs, the isolation of these identifying parts remind me of the elusiveness and perhaps oversimplification of the complex state of gender and identification. Labeling solely by genitals or visual cues seem to no longer suffice.
Separate from their reference to labels, however, these figures still express an embracing of intimate form, and the abstractness of gender expression and joy in that presentation. may 2020
